Small businesses are being displaced at a rapid rate due to unaffordable rent increases, resulting in the loss of jobs, economic diversity, and community culture. According to a 2022 report by the Boston Planning & Development Agency, the average commercial rent in Boston is among the highest in the country, with many small businesses struggling to afford prime locations.
Creativity Meets Commercial Affordability
In 2023, the City of Boston launched the SPACE Grants Program to stimulate commercial affordability by awarding grants to small businesses disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic so they can secure vacant storefronts in Boston’s commercial districts.
The program not only provides grants of up to $200,000 for Boston-based small businesses but it also gives those small businesses access to wrap-around technical assistance services thanks to the City’s Small Business Technical Assistance Program.
